Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
